Still Green Cohousing is a cohousing community for people aged 50 and over. TOWN is working as the enabling developer with Still Green’s members to build 29 homes and shared facilities within the Love Wolverton regeneration scheme in Milton Keynes.
Cohousing allows people to age with independence and dignity, without the problems of isolation and loneliness that afflict many older people. Everyone has their own private apartment with a balcony or terrace, but residents also benefit from a shared garden and generous common house with room to cook, eat and socialise together, as well as practical spaces like a shared laundry and a store for cycles and mobility aids. Members have been closely involved in the design of every aspect of the project and will work together to manage the community once they have moved in.

“We see cohousing as a great way to live as we grow older. We are planning to create a secure and supportive environment for the second half of life where we can be active and engaged with others when we want to and have peace and quiet in our own home when we don’t.”
Jenny Borden, Still Green Cohousing

More info.
The 29 apartments range from one to three bedrooms; 25 are for sale and four are for Social Rent.
Spacious homes in an accessible place.
The Still Green community will occupy a three-storey courtyard block fronting the high street to the north, with an open aspect to the south to maximise sunlight to a shared central garden, and neighbourly car-free ‘little streets’ to the east and west. A lift-serviced communal gallery running around the inner face of the block gives access to private apartments, which are all dual- or triple-aspect, generous in size and designed to the same high energy efficiency standards as the wider Love Wolverton scheme.

Place for a community.
The common house is the heart and hub of every cohousing community and regularly eating meals together is seen as the foundation of community life. Still Green cohousing community will benefit from a generous common house at the heart of the scheme with a large open plan lounge and dining area and adjacent kitchen, as well as two multipurpose rooms that can also be used for guests to stay in. The common house faces the shared courtyard garden and benefits from a generous sheltered terrace.
Online co-design.
Co-design of the scheme for planning was accomplished entirely online with Still Green members during the Covid pandemic. That collaborative and largely online approach will continue as the scheme progresses towards completion and working groups will be established to support joint working on the customisation options and the legal and sales process. As with other cohousing communities, Still Green members intend to manage their community collaboratively once they move in and having an active part in the development process supports that intention.

The block also incorporates a community space to be let to Future Wolverton for use by local young people.
